Abstract
It is known that art education is an educational process that covers all areas of fine arts and creative activities. Performing arts course, on the other hand, is a course that allows to bring together cultural values in dance, theater, music and so on. In today's world, with the development of technology and the increase in environmental stimuli, art education and teaching in a single place becomes more difficult, and outdoor teaching methods become more meaningful. Outdoor teaching methods are defined as out-of-class practices that respond to students' interests and needs and aim to gain knowledge and skills for the purposes of the course. From this point of view, the aim of the study is to make an application that will reveal whether folk dances are effective as an outdoor teaching method in art education and to examine the opinions of the students participating in the application. In terms of research type, it is a qualitative, phenomenological study. The Study Group of the research consists of 30 students who are studying at Şanlıurfa Harran University, Recreation Management Undergraduate Program and taking the 2021/2022 Fall Semester Performing Arts course. The choreographies and flow text of the stage performance "Seven Voices One Breath from Anatolia with their Tales and Folk Dances" were designed by the researchers. The data in the research were collected through interviews. The interview form prepared by the researchers in order to evaluate how the application affected the study group and what happened during the research process was obtained from the interviews with the students before starting the application, during the process and after the application was finished. The data obtained from the interview forms consisting of seven semi-structured questions were evaluated with statistical calculations (frequency, percentage). As an out-of-class practice with interview forms, observation of the process and findings obtained from written/visual documents; As a sub-branch of performing arts in active learning areas, folk dances provide a sense of social belonging to the individual, develop self-confidence and creativity, make learning effective and teach by doing, and performing as a lesson product in the performing arts class, especially for students who will take this course. It has been concluded that it is important in terms of productivity, contributes to the development of students' self-confidence, contributes positively to the sense of responsibility brought by group work, and contributes to the development of effective communication and empathy skills. Based on these results, it is suggested that outdoor methods should be included more frequently in art education and that the study should be done on a larger scale in order to investigate the effect of the study in other courses in art education.
